Thanks to our funding partners

Sport is engrained in our Kiwi culture but societal changes and global trends towards inactivity are impacting this. Sport New Zealand is the guardian of New Zealand's world-leading sporting system, from grassroots through to elite sport. While Water Safety New Zealand is an incorporated society, Sport New Zealand is the 'government home' for the water safety sector and is therefore the lead agency which works with Water Safety New Zealand on the 2020 sector strategy.

The Statutory grantmaker, Lottery Grants Board distributes the profits made from New Zealand state lotteries, such as Lotto and Instant Kiwi, for the benefit of New Zealand communities. Through Sport New Zealand, Water Safety New Zealand receives funding from Lottery Grants Board for its operating budget and community investment programme.

Bay Trust is working with Water Safety New Zealand on developing a Bay of Plenty regional water safety strategy with the aim of reducing drowning deaths and injuries in the region and building a culture of safe enjoyment around water.

The New Zealand Search and Rescue (NZSAR) Council provides high level strategic governance to all search and rescue agencies in New Zealand. WSNZ and NZSAR are working together to bring down New Zealand's high drowning rate. In particular, NZSAR contribute funds to WSNZ's Swim Reaper campaign geo-targeting social media messages to young males at the time they may make the wrong decision around water.

National Infrastructure Agencies and Programmes

A small group of agencies provide core infrastructure and programmes of the New Zealand water safety sector.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand
Coastguard New Zealand and Coastguard Boating Education (CBE)
Swimming New Zealand
Royal New Zealand Plunket Trust

The purpose of the National Infrastructure designation is to move the Water Safety New Zealand investment relationship with National Infrastructure Agencies to an investment approach, that allows greater certainty of planning and greater specificity of programme delivery, and a developmental approach that fosters agency capability and growth.
